Background of the Study
Migration has long influenced language diversification among Hausa communities, particularly in urban centers like Maiduguri. Historical migration—both voluntary and forced—has led to significant linguistic variation as Hausa speakers interact with diverse cultures and languages. These interactions foster dialectal differences and introduce new lexical and syntactic elements, contributing to language diversification (Salihu, 2023). In Maiduguri, migration has resulted in the coexistence of multiple Hausa dialects, each shaped by contact with neighboring ethnic groups and external influences. This phenomenon is evident in variations in pronunciation, vocabulary, and even grammatical structures. The study explores the historical patterns of migration and their effects on Hausa linguistic diversity by examining oral histories, archival records, and contemporary language surveys. The goal is to assess how migration has fostered linguistic adaptation and innovation while also posing challenges for language standardization (Ibrahim, 2024; Musa, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite clear evidence of migration-induced language diversification among Hausa communities, systematic research on this phenomenon in Maiduguri is limited. Variations in dialects have created challenges in language education, media communication, and cultural preservation (Salihu, 2023). The absence of standardized norms complicates inter-dialectal communication and hinders cohesive language planning. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the effects of historical migration on linguistic variation within Hausa, thereby providing a basis for more effective language management strategies (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:

  • To document dialectal variations among Hausa in Maiduguri.

  • To assess the influence of migration on language diversification.

  • To propose strategies for standardizing communication.
    Research Questions:

  • How has migration influenced Hausa dialects in Maiduguri?

  • What are the primary linguistic variations observed?

  • What interventions can harmonize dialectal differences?
    Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of migration on Hausa language diversification, providing valuable insights for educators and policymakers to manage linguistic variation and promote cohesive communication in Maiduguri (Salihu, 2023; Musa, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to historical migration effects on Hausa in Maiduguri; excludes contemporary migration trends.
    Definitions of Terms:

  • Migration: The movement of people that influences language change.

  • Language Diversification: The development of different dialects or linguistic forms.

  • Hausa Communities: Groups primarily speaking Hausa.
